   Quantum computing: What Is It? Quantum computing is the application of quantum theory to computer science. Quantum theory explains how energy and matter behave at atomic and subatomic sizes.   Quantum computing uses subatomic particles like electrons and photons. Because of quantum bits, or qubits, this particle may exist concurrently in two or more states (i.e., 1 and 0). According to theory, connected qubits might "exploit the interfering between their ocean quantum fluctuations to accomplish calculations that would otherwise take millions of years."   To encapsulate information in bits, traditional computers nowadays use a binary stream of electrical activity (1 and 0).
